By Ray Hawkins

In our contemporary culture, the word ‘love’ is often thrown around like confetti. It is used indiscriminately of varying depth to describe a range of relationships – anything from our enjoyment of an ice-cream flavour to a profound connection to our life-long husband or wife. Its application is diverse. Yet for Christians, love is the centrepiece for all that we are called to be and do. Love God, love others – the two greatest commandments. ‘All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’ (Matthew 22:40) Everything that we do centres on this idea of loving our great God and loving those created by Him.

Ray Hawkins graduated from the Churches of Christ Bible College at Woolwich in 1963. In 1964 he married Mary Pedler, also a graduate of the Woolwich College. Ray had ministries in New South Wales at Carramar and Tamworth and planted the church at Orange in 1968. After a ministry at Gladstone, Queensland, there followed ministries at Mayfield, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, and another church plant at Maitland, near Newcastle. On retirement in 2001, he assisted in the consolidation of a Church of Christ at Northampton, UK, until 2003. He now resides in Tasmania.
