This unit will integrate a study of Genesis with practical application in the delivery of sermons and oral presentations. Genesis is an exciting and challenging book that begins all canonical versions of the Bible. Exploring the background world of Genesis and theories on how the text came together will help inform our understanding of the book. We will consider the life-giving yet at times controversial content of Genesis including matters such as human sexuality and gender, ecology, human and divine violence, faith and science, family dynamics, origins and end points. This study will be engaged via an awareness of both ancient and current perspectives. By exercising presentation skills, utilising different modes of technology and analysing the stories and people of Genesis, we will learn how to communicate the book to a contemporary audience with appreciation of its original genre and style. Students will engage with and apply modern critical methods in the study of characters, passages, and theological themes as well as exploring how Genesis has been received over time.
