Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most commonly asked questions about studying at ACOM.

Applications and Enrolments

If you have your documents ready, you will be able to upload them through the online application form. However, if you are still collecting documents, you can complete the form and submit these separately by emailing them to admissions@acom.edu.au.

If you have completed accredited units of study at the same level as your ACOM study and it covers similar content and outcomes to an ACOM unit, you may be eligible for credit. You should speak to your Student Engagement Manager, and then apply using the form.

Yes. You are responsible for selecting which units you enrol in for each trimester, and you may select the number that you choose. One unit per trimester is considered part time, and two to three units is considered full time.

You can enrol in your units for the entire year using the unit enrolment form.

Your Student Engagement Manager will provide you with a course plan and suggested study pathway. If you have any questions, they are the best person to contact. To see which units are available in a particular trimester, visit the units page of the website.

Your student number is your Moodle username. You can also find it on your ACOM acceptance email or by emailing info@acom.edu.au.

ACOM aims to create and maintain a learning experience that is inclusive of the needs of all students, and which optimises their participation, retention and success through accessible and equitable learning, teaching and assessment practice. For more information, or to request support through the application of reasonable adjustments to your course, please complete an Enabling Plan request form.

Yes. All courses have a set maximum duration. However, within those limits, if you would like to take a break for a trimester, simply don’t enrol in a unit for that study period. Permission is not required to skip one trimester.

In exceptional circumstances, students may apply for a one year leave of absence. You should contact your Student Engagement Manager for more information about this.

Study at ACOM

You will get access to your unit on Moodle at the start of the trimester.

A facilitation is a real-time gathering (online or in person) designed to help students apply the content that they are learning within a peer setting. They allow students to process, question, extend and apply the unit to their life and/or ministry contexts.

Certain units have compulsory sessions because attendance (either online or in person) is essential for content delivery, practical in-class experience, or is required by external professional accreditation bodies. Units with compulsory attendance have this information clearly listed in their unit description.

If facilitation attendance is optional for the unit, students will indicate whether or not they plan to attend when submitting their unit enrolment form.

As a general rule, no. Facilitations are designed as interactive student experiences that help the students to question, process and apply course content. They are normally not content-focused lectures. Furthermore, those attending can feel more freedom to speak honestly if they know their discussions are not being recorded.

Counselling is a practice-based profession, and professional accreditation bodies expect students to participate in training, skills development, supervision and practicum-based learning activities. Some counselling units therefore include compulsory in-person attendance requirements, mandatory activities, and/or expectations that students attend at least 80% of scheduled online sessions to satisfy industry and accreditation standards.

ACOM strongly encourages students to attend all scheduled online sessions where possible, as participation provides a richer learning experience and better preparation for professional practice. However, most sessions are recorded, allowing students who are unable to attend to catch up on missed content. Recordings are intended to assist students who miss sessions for legitimate reasons and should not be regarded as a complete substitute for participation. Some sessions, including practicums and supervision, will not be recorded. Students should check the requirements listed for each unit on the ACOM website.

ACOM recognises that students balance study with work, family, ministry, and other commitments. We aim to provide students with flexibility in how they engage with their studies, however students are responsible for understanding the attendance requirements that apply to their enrolled units and for determining whether their level of participation is sufficient to meet any professional, registration, accreditation or membership requirements that may apply to them. Failure to attend required activities may affect a student's ability to satisfy those external requirements.

Yes, you can change your attendance prior to the unit enrolment deadline. After the unit enrolment deadline, if you change from attending to non-attending (or simply do not turn up), you will have to pay a $50 change of unit enrolment fee. If you change from non-attending to attending, there is no fee for changing.

The facilitation schedule for any unit can be found on its unit description page.

ACOM uses two referencing systems:

  • Counselling students: APA
  • All other students: Turabian

Students have access to comprehensive referencing guides for each of these systems in Moodle.

In P (Pastoral Theology) and M (Mission) units, students are expected to participate in some form of student vocational placement to ensure that learning is applied in an appropriate setting. Students taking units in these disciplines must submit the relevant forms in Moodle to confirm that their placement has been completed.

The student is responsible for organising their own vocational placement. Guidelines are provided on Moodle.

Other Questions

Student cards are provided free of charge at the request of the student. Requests should be made by completing the Student Card Request Form that will require a high-resolution head and shoulders photograph.

Please note that as ACOM is an online education provider, students are not eligible for transport concessions.

Under Commonwealth Government guidelines, Youth Allowance (age 17-24) and Austudy (25 years and above) are available for eligible full-time students who are working towards accredited awards. Abstudy is available to eligible full-time students with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait backgrounds. Full-time is defined by Centrelink as studying 75% or more of a course’s full time study load. In practice, this means that a student must be studying 6 units annually. Enquiries about eligibility and applications for Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy should be directed to Centrelink.

Unfortunately, ACOM students are not eligible for free Microsoft Office software. However, they are able to utilise their free web-based Office option.

ACOM is owned by churches of Christ in NSW & ACT, Churches of Christ in Victoria and Tasmania, Churches of Christ QLD, and the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Australia. We also have strong partnerships with a range of organisations, and a wide cross-denominational student and staff body.

If you have other questions, contact your Student Engagement Manager or any of our staff. For each of your units on Moodle, the names of your marker and Academic Coordinator can be found in the bottom left-hand corner. You can message them by clicking on their name.
