Trauma is understood as an overwhelming response to significant life events that have a profound impact. Additionally, individuals and communities may experience post-traumatic growth as a result of crisis. This unit examines the relationship between the Bible, trauma and growth. Drawing upon fields such as psychology, history, sociology and literary studies, valuable perspectives are gained towards reading, interpreting and applying biblical texts that originated in contexts of trauma. Throughout history, biblical texts have been received in diverse ways as texts, providing consolation, addressing challenges, and facilitating personal growth. The therapeutic value of biblical texts in contemporary trauma contexts will be critically assessed.
