Unit Details

This unit explores the theology and practice of social justice from a Christian perspective.

Social justice has become a popular and often controversial topic within the church and broader Australian society. Social justice is, for some Christians, the centre of the faith while, for others, it is a distraction from what they see as the real work of the gospel.

By exploring social justice through a biblical, historical, and philosophical lens, this unit aims to help students to develop a comprehensive understanding of social justice, to learn to apply that perspective to a range of contemporary social issues, and to understand the crucial part that social justice plays in Christian discipleship.

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Explain the nature and content of a Christian understanding of social justice.
  2. Outline the biblical, historical and philosophical perspectives of a Christian response to social justice issues.
  3. Engage with literature on the theme of social justice.
  4. Evaluate a contemporary Christian response to a social justice issue.
  5. Apply perspectives from the unit to a contemporary social issue of relevance to the student.
