Unit Details

This unit will introduce students to the issues and potential treatment of family-related presentations. Students will examine a range of systemic theoretical positions and learn how to apply this knowledge to specific scenarios. In addition, students will learn to use relevant tools to analyse and evaluate family structures.

 

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Examine and analyse one’s own family of origin, affirming the relevance of family of origin work for counselling practice; utilise tools such as the genogram to conceptualise, assess and work with families.
  2. Using a systemic approach, assess and identify a range of presenting issues to be addressed in family therapy.
  3. Critically analyse and evaluate the diversity within family structures, considering inclusive, culturally aware and social context perspectives.
  4. Discriminate a range of systemic theoretical positions including principles, working assumptions and techniques of family systemic practice.
  5. Apply knowledge and skills with initiative and judgement in family counselling practice.
